Step-by-Step Instructions for Carne Guisada

  • Begin by heating the vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the beef chuck cubes to the pot in a single layer. Brown the beef on all sides for about 5-7 minutes.
  • Once the beef is browned, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 3-4 minutes.
  • Incorporate the chopped tomatoes into the mixture, stirring well to combine. Allow to soften for 3-4 minutes.
  • Sprinkle in the ground cumin, chili powder, paprika, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir for 1-2 minutes.
  • Pour in the beef broth and water, stirring well to combine. Bring to a gentle boil for a minute or two.
  • Once boiling, place the bay leaf into the pot. Stir and reduce the heat to low.
  • Cover and let the stew simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • If using, add bell peppers and carrots about 30 minutes before cooking time is complete.
  • Before serving, taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Remove the bay leaf and serve hot.

Notes
