Ingredients
  

For the Pastry

  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs

For the Custard Filling

  • 2 cups milk
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar for dusting before serving

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and gather necessary equipment.
  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and ½ cup of butter over medium heat until boiling.
  • Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of all-purpose flour until smooth.
  • Allow mixture to cool and add 4 large eggs one at a time, beating well.
  • Spread half of the dough on a greased baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden.
  • In another saucepan, combine custard ingredients and cook until thick, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Spread custard over cooled pastry layer and top with the second pastry layer.
  • Chill the assembled cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Use room temperature eggs for better incorporation, and allow layers to cool completely before layering.
