Step-by-Step Instructions for Candied Cranberries

  • Begin by rinsing 2 cups of fresh cranberries under cold water. Carefully inspect and remove any stems or damaged berries.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  • Once your syrup is clear, add in ½ cup of orange juice, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Stir well.
  • Carefully add the prepared cranberries into the saucepan, ensuring they are all evenly coated with the syrup. Allow them to simmer gently for about 5 minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberries cool in the syrup for an additional 10 minutes.
  • While the cranberries are cooling, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the cranberries from the syrup and place them on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.
  • Once the cranberries have dried, transfer ½ cup of powdered sugar into a bowl. Toss the cooled cranberries in the powdered sugar.
  • Place the sugared cranberries back on the parchment-lined baking sheet and allow them to set for another 15 minutes.
  • Optionally, before serving, sprinkle some fresh orange zest over the cranberries.

Notes

Choose fresh berries for the best results. Maintain medium heat while making the syrup and don’t rush drying the cranberries.
