Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your heart-shaped cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter until smooth. Gradually add sugar and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time to the butter and sugar mixture, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla.
  • Mix together the milk and sour cream in a separate bowl. Gradually add to the creamed mixture, alternating with dry ingredients.
  • Reserve 2 cups of batter and color as desired using gel food coloring.
  • Pour half of the plain batter into a lined pan; add colored dots and top with yellow batter. Bake for 12–16 minutes.
  • In greased pans, pour a thin layer of plain batter, dot with colored batter, and swirl. Bake according to pan size.
  • Cool the cakes in the pans before turning them out onto wire racks. Level and chill in the refrigerator.
  • Beat together the butter and gradually add powdered sugar and cream to make the frosting.
  • Reserve some frosting for later; color the remaining frosting as needed for decoration.
  • Assemble the cake by layering, applying a crumb coat, and refrigerating it to set the frosting.
  • Pipe the cheetah pattern with colored frosting over the final coat.
  • Chill the cake again for 30–45 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature to achieve the best texture and mix the batter gently to avoid a dense cake. Chill layers for easier frosting.
