Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease four 8-inch round cake pans with butter or oil. Dust lightly with flour.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and oil with sugar until creamy, then mix in applesauce, eggs, and vanilla.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixtures, alternating with the milk, until just combined.
  • Fold in chopped apples gently.
  • Divide batter among pans, filling each about two-thirds full. Smooth tops with a spatula.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  • For the buttercream, beat softened butter, vanilla, caramel sauce, and cinnamon until smooth. Gradually mix in powdered sugar.
  • Level the tops of cakes if domed, then stack layers with buttercream in between.
  • Spread a thin layer of buttercream around the cake for a crumb coat and chill for 15 minutes. Frost the entire cake with remaining buttercream.
