Step-by-Step Instructions for White Bread

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt, and 2 ¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast. Stir these dry ingredients together with a whisk until evenly blended.
  • Gradually add 1 ½ cups of warm water to the dry mixture while stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and pour it over the shaggy dough. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Gently punch it down and shape it into a loaf by pressing it into a rectangle and rolling tightly. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  • Cover the loaf pan with a clean cloth and let rise again for about 30-40 minutes until doubled in size.
