  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil for sautéing

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 large Potatoes peeled and chopped
  • ½ cup Milk or dairy-free alternative
  • 4 tablespoons Butter or olive oil for a lighter option

For the Spooky Decorations (optional)

  • 1 can Black olives for 'eyeballs'
  • as desired Ketchup or sriracha for drizzle
  • 1 cup Shredded cheese for topping

Step‑by‑Step Instructions

  • Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: Place peeled and chopped potatoes into a saucepan, cover with water, and boil for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain, add butter and milk, mash until smooth, and season with salt and pepper. Optional: add food coloring.
  • Cook the Meat Filling: In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic for 2-3 minutes until translucent. Add ground beef or lamb, cook until browned (5-7 mins). Add carrots, peas, tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 mins until thick.
  • Assemble the Shepherd’s Pie: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread meat filling in a baking dish and top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly. Create patterns or shapes with a fork.
  • Bake the Pie: Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden. Optional: sprinkle shredded cheese in the last 2-3 minutes.
  • Add Final Decorations: Once baked, cool for 5 minutes. Decorate with sliced olives for 'eyeballs' or drizzle ketchup for a 'bloody' effect. Serve hot.
