Step-by-Step Instructions for Swedish Apple Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round or square baking pan and line it with parchment paper.
  • Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples into wedges.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground cardamom if using.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until combined.
  • Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan, then layer half of the apple slices on top.
  • Dollop the remaining batter over the apples and arrange the remaining apple slices on top.
  • Mix the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the topping, and sprinkle it over the apples.
  • Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes before removing it from the pan.

Notes

For best results, use apples that hold their shape when baked, and avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cake light.
