Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a mixing bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. Gradually add the foamy yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and boil water in a pot, adding baking soda.
  • Shape the risen dough into ropes and cut into 1-inch segments.
  • Boil each bite in the baking soda water for 30 seconds and remove to a lined baking sheet.
  • Brush with melted butter and bake for 10–12 minutes until golden brown.
