Ingredients
  

For the Cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup applesauce
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups chopped apples

For the Caramel Buttercream

  • 2 cups unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup caramel sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

Procedure

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease four 8-inch round cake pans.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Set aside.
  • In another bowl, cream together butter, oil, applesauce, and sugar until smooth; then mix in eggs and vanilla.
  • Combine the wet and dry mixtures, alternating with milk, until smooth.
  • Fold in chopped apples gently.
  • Divide the batter among the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • For the buttercream, beat butter, vanilla, caramel sauce, and cinnamon until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar.
  • Once cooled, level the cake layers and assemble with buttercream in between.
  • Apply a crumb coat, chill, then frost the entire cake.
  • Slice and serve your beautifully decorated Caramel Apple Spice Cake.
