Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Piping bag
  • Deep fryer or heavy-bottom pot
  • Slotted spoon

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 cup Water Provides moisture essential for the dough's structure.
  • ½ cup Unsalted Butter Adds richness and flavor; substitute with coconut oil for dairy-free churros.
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated Sugar Sweetens the dough and enhances its flavor.
  • 1 pinch Salt Balances the sweetness perfectly; leave out for low-sodium diets.
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour Gives the familiar churro structure; try gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 2 large Eggs Creates a light, airy texture; use flax eggs as a vegan option.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Infuses a delightful aroma; almond extract can add a unique twist.

For Frying

  • 2 inches Vegetable Oil High smoke point oils, like canola or peanut, create the perfect crispy texture.

For Coating

  • ½ cup Sugar Coats the churros for that sweet finish; no substitutes recommended.
  • 1 tablespoon Ground Cinnamon Provides the classic churro flavor; nutmeg or ground cloves can be used for a spiced variation.

For the Chocolate Dipping Sauce

  • 1 cup Chocolate Chips The star of the dipping sauce; dark chocolate works wonderfully too.
  • ½ cup Heavy Cream Creates a smooth and rich sauce; coconut cream can substitute for a dairy-free option.

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, ½ cup of unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt. Bring this mixture to a rolling boil over medium heat. Once boiling, remove from heat and promptly stir in 1 cup of all-purpose flour until a ball of dough forms.
  • Allow the dough to cool for about 5 minutes, then beat in 2 large eggs one at a time using a mixing spoon or hand mixer, mixing until fully incorporated after each addition. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • In a deep fryer or a large heavy-bottom pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
  • Transfer the churro dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Carefully pipe 4-6 inch strips of dough directly into the hot oil.
  • Fry the churros until they are golden brown, which should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the churros from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels.
  • In a bowl, mix together ½ cup of granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Toss the warm churros in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until thoroughly coated.
  • For the chocolate dipping sauce, heat ½ cup of heavy cream in a saucepan until it just begins to simmer. Mix in 1 cup of chocolate chips, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
  • Serve your warm churros alongside the smooth chocolate dipping sauce.

Notes

Serve churros warm for the best flavor and texture. Experiment with flavors for customized churros.
