Step‑by‑Step Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and gather all your ingredients and equipment.
  • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat and whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour to create a roux.
  • Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk, stirring until thickened, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Stir in 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, then melt in 1 cup each of sharp cheddar and Gruyère cheese.
  • Layer half of the sliced Yukon Gold potatoes in a baking dish, pour half of the cheese sauce over them, then repeat the layers.
  • Sprinkle ½ cup of bread crumbs over the top layer and optionally drizzle with melted butter.
