Ingredients
  

For the Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

For the Decoration

  • 1 drop red food coloring gel preferred

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Cream together 1 cup of softened butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.
  • Add 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract. Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add 2½ cups of flour and ½ teaspoon of salt, mixing on low speed until a soft dough forms.
  • Divide the dough in half and knead in red food coloring to one half until evenly colored.
  • Roll 1 teaspoon of each colored dough into 4-inch long ropes, twist them together, and form into candy cane shapes.
  • Bake for 8–10 minutes, watching for lightly golden bottoms, then cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for best results. Store cookies in an airtight container.
