  • 1 can (14–15 oz) black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (14–15 oz) kidney beans or pinto beans also drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup chicken broth or vegetable broth low-sodium
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or brown sugar optional, to balance acidity
  • ½ lime lime juice juice of
  • 2 tablespoon fresh cilantro chopped, optional but recommended

For the Avocado Topping

  • 2 ripe avocados diced
  • 1 lime lime juice juice of
  • 2 tablespoon red onion finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1 small jalapeño minced, optional
  • 0.25 teaspoon kosher salt or to taste
  • black pepper freshly ground, to taste

Optional Toppings

  • 0.5 cup cheddar or pepper jack cheese shredded

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scrub the sweet potatoes under running water, pierce each one several times with a fork, rub with olive oil, then sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Place the sweet potatoes on the baking sheet and bake for 45–60 minutes, until tender. Let cool slightly.
  • Dice the onion and bell pepper, mince the jalapeño and garlic. Drain and rinse the canned beans. Combine chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and other spices in a small bowl.
  • In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion and bell pepper for about 5–7 minutes until softened. Add jalapeño and garlic, cooking for an additional 1–2 minutes.
  • Add the ground turkey, breaking it apart. Cook for 5–7 minutes until browned. Stir in tomato paste and spice mix for 1-2 minutes.
  • Pour in diced tomatoes, black beans, kidney beans, and broth. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and let simmer uncovered for 20–25 minutes.
  • For the avocado topping, combine diced avocados, lime juice, chopped red onion, cilantro, and minced jalapeño. Toss gently and season with salt and pepper.
  • Carefully slice each baked sweet potato lengthwise, fluff the insides, and season. Each sweet potato serves as a vessel for the chili.
  • Spoon turkey chili into sweet potatoes, add cheese and a dollop of yogurt if desired. Top with avocado salsa, cilantro, and optional green onions.
